Corda Viva is an international duo bringing together violinist Ann Vancoillie and mandolinist, bassist and cellist Rui Salgado.
Rooted in Brazilian choro, jazz and improvisation, their music unfolds as a vivid dialogue between rhythm, melody and virtuosity, blending classical depth with spontaneous expression.
LINE-UP FLEXIBILITY
Corda Viva is conceived primarily as a duo, allowing for an intimate and refined musical dialogue.
At the same time, the project remains open to expansion. Depending on the context, venue or artistic proposal, the duo can be presented in an extended formation, with the addition of instruments such as guitar, piano, double bass (Jim Monneau) and drums.
This flexibility allows the repertoire to adapt organically to different settings, from chamber-like performances to a full band format.

Ann Vancoillie is first violinist/second soloist at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and is also active as a soloist, chamber musician and jazz violinist.
She initiates cross-over projects bringing together classical music, jazz, improvisation and other art forms.

RUI SALGADO – SHORT BIO
Rui Salgado is a Portuguese multi-instrumentalist (mandolin, double bass, electric bass and cello), composer, arranger and educator.
His work bridges jazz, Brazilian choro, classical repertoire and contemporary music and is marked by a distinctive instrumental and harmonic approach.
ANN VANCOILLIE – EXTENDED BIOGRAPHY
Ann Vancoillie is first violinist/second soloist at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and is widely active as a soloist, chamber musician and jazz violinist.
She studied at the Royal Conservatories of Ghent and Brussels and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with teachers such as Kati Sebestyen, André Gertler, Henri Raudales, Sándor Végh, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Hagen Quartet.
She obtained higher diplomas in violin, chamber music and pedagogy (KCB, 1988) and a Master of Performing Arts at KASK (2017).
During the COVID period, she returned to the Conservatoire of Brussels, this time in the French-speaking section, and successfully completed this intensive program with a Bachelor of Jazz Violin. (2024)
She combined her final year of studies with full-time professional work at the opera, reflecting exceptional discipline and dedication.
Her musical activity spans baroque, classical and contemporary repertoire, as well as jazz and free improvisation.
She performs on a variety of instruments adapted to each style, including baroque violin, modern violin, electric Zeta violin and a five-string electric violin.
Ann has served as concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders, the Conservatory Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra, and as principal second violinist in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
She has collaborated with ensembles such as Les Musiciens du Louvre, Le Concert d’Anvers, Octopus and Ex Tempore, and is active in contemporary music ensembles including Champs d’Action and Logos.
As a soloist, she has performed major concertos by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Beethoven, Sarasate and Bruch, premiered works written specifically for her and performed her own compositions.
She toured extensively in Europe, the United States, Iran and Tajikistan and represented Belgium in the World Youth Orchestra and the World Peace Orchestra in South Korea.
Alongside her classical career, Ann has been deeply engaged in jazz and improvisation since 2014.
She participated in international academies and masterclasses including the New York Jazz Academy, Vermont Jazz Adventures, Berklee Jazz Clinics in Perugia and the Gypsy Jazz Masterclass with Eva Slongo in the Cévennes.
Her artistic work is characterized by a constant dialogue between structure and freedom, tradition and innovation.

Born in Porto, Portugal, Rui Salgado is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and educator whose musical language bridges jazz, Brazilian choro, classical music and contemporary creation.
He began studying electric bass at the Porto Jazz School and later earned a degree in Business Management at the Catholic University of Porto.
He continued his musical training in jazz double bass at ESMAE and at the Lemmens Institute in Belgium, graduating in 2009.
Rui has performed and recorded with numerous jazz and cross-over projects throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
He collaborated with a wide range of ensembles and artists and performed at festivals and venues such as Brosella, Huy Arts Festival and La Ferme du Biéreau.
His discography includes projects such as Atlantic Avenue, Snowball, Trio Janela and Loco Mosquito.
In 2017, Rui adopted a fifth-based tuning system for all his instruments, inspired by double bassist Red Mitchell.
He applies this tuning consistently to mandolin, cello, double bass and electric bass, shaping a highly personal instrumental and compositional language.
Alongside his performance career, Rui is active as an arranger and producer.
In 2024, he was commissioned by the Portuguese Embassy in Brussels to arrange songs by female composers from the Portuguese revolution, resulting in the album Elas – Songs of the Portuguese Revolution.
He also composed film music and produced several live and studio recordings.
Rui is active as an educator in Brussels and continues to develop projects exploring rhythm, harmony, melody and instrumental identity.

Rui Salgado, geboren in Porto, is een Portugese multi-instrumentalist, componist, arrangeur en docent.
Hij begon zijn opleiding op elektrische bas aan de Porto Jazz School en behaalde later een diploma bedrijfsmanagement aan de Katholieke Universiteit van Porto.
Zijn muzikale vorming zette hij voort met studies jazzcontrabas aan ESMAE en het Lemmensinstituut, waar hij in 2009 afstudeerde.
Zijn internationale carrière omvat concerten, tournees en opnames in Europa, Noord-Afrika en het Midden-Oosten.
Hij werkte samen met diverse jazz- en cross-overformaties en trad op bij festivals en concertzalen zoals Brosella, het Huy Arts Festival en La Ferme du Biéreau.
In 2017 maakte Rui een fundamentele artistieke keuze door al zijn instrumenten in kwinten te stemmen, geïnspireerd door contrabassist Red Mitchell.
Deze benadering vormt sindsdien de kern van zijn muzikale identiteit.
Naast zijn uitvoerende carrière is Rui actief als arrangeur en producer.
In 2024 werd hij door de Portugese ambassade in Brussel gevraagd om liederen van vrouwelijke componisten uit de Portugese revolutie te arrangeren, wat resulteerde in het album Elas – Songs of the Portuguese Revolution.
